Field-tests have been developed in an attempt to quantify each of those physical abilities. 20– 28 For example, speed, power and agility are physical abilities needed for success in the sport of soccer. Traditionally, field-testing has been done in a variety of sports in an effort to measure sport-specific physical abilities. 7, 17– 19 As such, it is imperative that the coaches, trainers, and therapists involved in the sport be able to monitor an individual gymnast's physical abilities and overall fitness level as a means of promoting healthy, injury-free participation in the sport. A gymnast's physical abilities may also be related to the ability to sustain injury free participation in the sport. Speed, 1– 4 strength, 2, 3, 5, 6 endurance, 5 agility, 7 flexibility, 3, 8– 12 balance, 2, 13 and power 8, 14– 16 are all physical abilities that play a role in the success of a competitive gymnast. Women's competitive gymnastics is a multifaceted sport that requires a high level of physical fitness and skill to succeed.
